Updating Your Home With New Siding

Are you considering updating the siding and aluminum on your home? Maybe your exterior looks outdated or faded, and you're ready for a change. Maybe you're looking to sell and want to increase the curb appeal of your home for maximum resale value. Or maybe you've reno'd an area of your home and need to match the existing exterior. Whatever the reason, your home will be transformed with new siding, soffit, fascia and eavestroughing (gutters).

Nowadays, with so many colours, materials, profiles, and accessories to choose from, your home can be completely customized.

Why not consider a mix of vertical and horiztonal vinyl siding on different areas of your home? You can also mix colours and textures, and even add in faux stone!

As well you may want to consider certain features on some areas of your home (like the front), but keeps other areas more simple (such as the back) to save on cost.

If you're contemplating new siding, soffit, fascia, and eavestrough (gutters), here are a few questions to consider:

  • What is the style of your home, and what 'look' best fits that style?

  •  What colours are on the areas of your home you won't be changing? (ie. your roof or driveway)

  • What colours are you drawn to? What about profiles and textures?

  • What areas are most visible to others for curb appeal?

  • What level of maintenance is important to you? What about warranty?

  • Do you have a preference in siding material?

  • What is your budget?

  • Are you looking to improve your home's energy-efficiency? (ie. improving the exterior insulation on your home)

When deciding to replace the siding on your home, you may want to consider increasing the insulation value of your exterior. You may be experiencing heat loss through the walls, which in turn may be impacting your heating bills.

Many people don't realize or consider that when upgrading the exterior of a home, it is also a perfect opportunty (and most cost-effective) to improve your home's energy-efficiency. We can externally increase the insulation value (R-value) of the walls of your home by up to 100% if desired. The walls can be covered with styrofoam or polystyrene adding anywhere from an R1 increase all the way up to an R13 if desired. Products such as Levelwall provide multiple advantages in its application in that it a) helps to smooth out any irregularities in the wall, b) increases the R-value, c) once installed, all the seams are taped together, thus also providing an exterior moisture-barrier, and d) gives a proper backing to support new vinyl siding installed over top of it, as it goes through its expansion and contraction (common in our Canadian climate).

Other ways to increase the efficiency of your home and help with cost savings in the long run include replacing your soffit, fascia, and eavestroughing (gutters). In doing so, not only will your home look refreshed, but may improve your water drainage and provide better ventilation for your attic, which helps to extend the longevity of your roof.

If you're experiencing heat loss through your existing windows but aren't ready to replace them, you may want to consider new caulking. This can help to decrease wind penetration and provides a cost-effective alternative until you're ready to replace your windows.

Lastly, though not an improvement on energy-efficiency, updating your exterior can also provide a welcome bonus: rodent-proofing.
